If you’ve been paying attention to recent events, you know that a Kansas City Chiefs’ player killed his girlfriend and then himself. It was a sad day for the football community. Many people came out and mentioned the tragedy. But, Bob Costas, sports commentator, took it a bit further. During his halftime segment on Sunday Night Football he talked about gun control.

Now, I’m not writing this post to discuss gun control. I’m writing this to remind you to stick with what you know. Bob Costas is a great sports  commentator. And that is what  he is known for. People don’t tune in during Sunday Night Football to hear  him talk  about gun control. They tune in to here him talk about sports because that is his expertise.

Stay an Expert in Your Field

If you have a blog that is devoted to writing, then make sure that is what your posts are on. Don’t go on  a rampage about the price of cereal. That is not what your readers are looking for. Now if you have a second blog that is about the economy, then food costs would be  an appropriate topic.

Just remember that you are trying to establish yourself as an expert in a particular niche. Stick with that niche on your blog posts, social media updates and any other venues you may be using. This way you will be known as an expert in a specific market, and people will look to you for answers to their problems.

Do you think Bob Costas’ comments  were appropriate or is it OK to be controversial? Did Bob Costas overstep his bounds by using halftime of a nationally televised football game as a platform?
